Scope and Content Note

This collection contains citations which accompanied medals and awards presented to various Navy personnel, ships, task groups, and squadrons. The bulk of the material in this collection relates to awards presented for service in World War II. A smaller number of citations recognize service in Korea and Vietnam. The collection is arranged in six series.

Series I, Individual Award Citations, makes up the majority of the collection, spanning 92 boxes. The citations in this series describe medals and awards presented to individual service members. They date largely from World War II, but continue into the mid-1970s. This series is arranged alphabetically by the recipient's last name.

Series II, III, and IV contain various Unit Citations. These awards are given to ships, squadrons, and task groups as a whole rather than to individual personnel. In Series II are Presidential Unit Citations dating from World War II through the late 1960s. Series III contains Navy Unit Commendations from World War II through the late 1960s, and in Series IV are Meritorious Unit Commendations. Each series is arranged alphabetically by the name of the ship or unit receiving the award.

Series V holds lists of Navy Cross recipients from each state for awards given between 1941 and 1948. This series is arranged alphabetically by state.

Series VI, consisting of one folder, contains lists of Medal of Honor recipients between 1941 and 1948.
