Vice Admiral William S. Sims, Commander, United States Naval Forces Operating in European Waters, to Commander Charles P. Nelson, Commander, Submarine Chaser Detachment Two
File No. 25-9-16 “E”
CABLEGRAM SENT October 22, 1918. Y-29
To Chasnav Corfu Serial No. 38.
381 Your 274 Admiralty states that the breaking up of mobile barrage is not to take place unless Austria drops out of the war. Withdrawal of forces is reported to be only temporary on account of necessity for them to cover certain operations in Augean [i.e., Aegean]. Your submarine chasers are not to retire on Gibraltar and are not to be withdrawn from Corfu according to present plans. In case protecting vessels are withdrawn from mobile barrage your submarine chasers are to suspend operations. In that case assemble boats at Corfu and make report by cable. Make no preparations for leaving Corfu but continue all work on base in preparation for permanent stay. Youare neither to seek nor accept orders from any source except the Force Commander looking to a departure from Corfu or operations other than those for which your force was sent to that base. 152122 381
