USS COLE (DDG-67) Attack:

Documenting the Experiences of the Crew

& Documenting the Repair Efforts

Collection Number: AR/699

Deployment Dates:

Norfolk: 12-23 March 2001

Pascagoula: 17 April - 4 May 2001

DET 206 reservists gathered oral histories and historial materials related to the attack on USS COLE (DDG-67) on two separate deployments. One DET 206 reservist team deployed to Naval Surface Force Atlantic (COMNAVSURFLANT) in Norfolk, Virginia in March 2001. Two DET 206 reservists deployed to Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi in April and May 2001. Because all of the oral histories and historical materials gathered by the teams document the attack on USS COLE and the aftermath, all of the materials were processed together into a single collection.

History

On 12 October 2000, a boat carrying explosives was deliberately rammed into the side of the port side of USS COLE (DDG-67), while the destroyer was refueling in the port of Aden, Yemen. The resulting explosion took the lives of 17 USS COLE crewmembers and injured dozens more. The explosion ripped a massive hole in USS COLE at the point of impact and caused other significant damage. For three days following the explosion, crewmembers worked tirelessly to control flooding and perform other damage control. In the weeks following the attack, the crippled USS COLE was loaded onto the salvage ship MV Blue Marlin and hauled to Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi for repairs. USS COLE had been built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1994. MV Blue Marlin and USS COLE arrived in Pascagoula on 13 December 2000. After more than a year of repair work, USS COLE departed Pascagoula on 19 April 2002.

Collection Overview

This collection contains historical materials and oral histories that document the 2000 attack on USS COLE and the resultant repair work at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The historical materials include reports, photographs, correspondence, and news articles. The oral histories and historical materials were gathered by teams of DET 206 reservists in 2001. The collection also contains deployment documentation created by the DET 206 reservists before and after their deployments. Some historical materials were removed upon accessioning and could not be located at time of processing.

One DET 206 reservist team deployed to Naval Surface Force Atlantic (COMNAVSURFLANT) in Norfolk, Virginia in March 2001. At COMNAVSURFLANT, the reservists interviewed 18 crewmembers who were serving on USS COLE at the time of the attack. The reservists also interviewed 11 individuals who were involved with the public affairs efforts and support for the crew and their families. The reservists also gathered historical materials documenting the attack, the ensuing investigation, and the responses to the attack by the United States Navy and Federal government officials.

Two DET 206 reservists deployed to Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi in April and May 2001. The reservists interviewed 22 civilians and Navy personnel who were involved with the repair work being done on USS COLE at Ingalls. The reservists deployed to Pascagoula also gathered historical materials that document the damage to USS COLE as well as the repair work.
