In 2012, NFESC was consolidated into the Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC).  EXWC provides research, development, testing and evaluation, in-service engineering, and life-cycle management for shore, oceans, and expeditionary domains.

The Oceans Technical Department (Oceans) is the Department of Defense (DOD) provider for seafloor engineering, moorings, shore-based hyperbaric facilities, and underwater cable structures.

Oceans also provides specialized engineering in pier and wharf condition assessment, marine and offshore structures, seafloor surveys, and ocean construction. The department employs NAVFAC's ocean engineering subject matter experts in ashore hyperbaric and diving systems, specialized and fleet moorings, underwater construction, magnetic silencing facilities, underwater inspection, and underwater cable facilities.

Oceans also supports the Fleet Underwater Construction Teams, Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Air Systems Command, and other U.S. Navy and DOD commands.
