2015.29 Nancy McGraw Collection

Images from the collection of LT Chaplain William Foster, Jr. during his WWII service with the 35th Seabees battalion in Manila, 1945. LT Foster was a musician and directed a local choir while stationed in Manila. The subject matter generally consists of villagers (adults and children), general Manila landscapes and buildings (including those destroyed), choirs, dances, religious services, sailors performing various duties (mess/cooking, laundry, sewing, barber, etc.), general base and aerial images, as well as ships in port. Specific base photos include: machine/mechanical shops, construction shops, supply, the motor pool, movie projection room, and Nichols Field. Several photos of Corregidor consist of tunnels and aerials. Of particular note is a series of images related to the trial of Tomoyuki Yamashita in Manila for his troops' conduct during the Japanese defense of the occupied Philippines in 1944. There is a series of ship launching and christening images unrelated to Manila or the Seabees in the collection: SS Clearwater Victory (Victory Ship), 1945; SS Gretna Victory (Victory Ship), 1945; and USS Navarro (APA-215), 1944.
