CHIEF OF STAFF     }      Memorandum for     Commanding Officer,

U.S.S. Gloucester.

    Please proceed at once to Daiquiri and report to Captain Goodrich1 for the purpose of conveying three steam cutters, which will be used in laying a pontoon bridge there, and also in the embarking of troops tomorrow morning.

    You will return after the embarkation of these troops to your station, unless your service are required with landing these troops at Juraguacito,2 where it is proposed to land if possible.

    General Ludlow3 goes in this afternoon to Acerraderos with the Allmo for the purpose of laying a pontoon bridge at daylight in the morning. He will have on board a pilot from this ship; you will please apply to him for the services of this pilot to take you inside on your arrival, and you will please co-operate with General Ludlow in his work to the utmost of your ability.
