Description: Whiting was one of the pioneers of submarine warfare and naval aviation. During World War I, he was among the first Americans to reach Europe and helped established a naval air station at Dunkirk. He went on to a distinguished career that included developing the first U.S. aircraft carriers. He died of a heart attack while still in uniform on 24 April 1943.
