After several months of service with the Potomac Flotilla and the James River Flotilla, A. C. Powell, a steamer purchased by the Navy on 3 October 1861, was renamed Alert (q.v.) during the summer of 1862. On 2 February 1865, her name was again changed, on this occasion to Watch.
