Van Leer Kirkman, USN (right) Commandant of the U.S. Naval Operating Base, Londonderry, Northern Ireland completes the first year of Operations at this American base in a warm handclasp with Commodore Ross Stewart, R.N. British Liason Officer at Derry. A brief ceremony was held on Feb 5, 1943 during which Commodore Stewart unveiled the plaque shown between the two men."
