Caption: Collection photo # UA 39.03.01 - USS Wateree beached at Arica, Chile, 430 yards above the usual high water mark, after she was deposited there by a tidal wave on 13 August 1868.
Description: Collection of four images, two of which are related to ship damage by a tsunami on 13 August 1868, including the destruction of the USS Wateree while she was in port at Arica (then part of Peru) (same as NH 43999 / possibly the original print). The other images include one of the other ships which were destroyed by the tsunami as well as two images include native Arauco Indians of Chile.
