S-561 Matthew Swain Collection

Collection of 23 copied photographs from the photo album E.F. Smith while serving aboard USS Villalobos (PG-42), 1907-1908 while serving in the Asiatic Fleet, mainly in Chinese waters. Subject matter consists of crewmembers aboard the USS Villalobos; ship’s officers; Chinese small craft and shipping in a Chinese port; Secretary of War William Howard Taft debarking from USS Villalobos; sporting and general activities aboard ship (boxing, laundry, swimming, etc.); and crewmembers with pigs after a hunt ashore in China. The collection also consists of two copies of stereo cards of a US Navy landing party at Honolulu, HI, circa 1890s and the crew of USS Olympia, 1899. The entire album was not copied and those images that were are only of average quality. Several images have been individually cataloged at the item level within the NH series: NH 102661-102677.
