S-081 Commander Haines Lippincott Collection

S-081 Commander Haines Lippincott Collection 2 large scrapbooks, several loose prints, and a small photo book belonging to Commander Haines Lippincott, donated by his sister. They pertain to his service as a Navy Chaplain from 1917-1926. Primarily related to his time as chaplain on board USS Iowa (BB-4), USS Pennsylvania (BB-38), USS Texas (BB-35), and Naval Training Station Hampton Roads. Many scenes of sailors on duty and engaging in off duty activities. Also many images ashore, both on liberty and what appears to be vacations inland. Scrapbooks were disassembled due to preservation issues. Some photos have been assigned NH numbers or moved to the NH collection.

S-081-B: Photo book “The New Pacific Fleet Through the Panama Canal July 1919” which features numerous ships of the era in the Canal. Several of the pages have been assigned NH numbers.


S-081-C: Large scrapbook with nearly 700 photos, disassembled due to preservation issues, focused on Lippincott’s time as chaplain on board USS Iowa (BB-4) and USS Wisconsin (BB-9), 1918-1919. Many scenes on deck, during drills, coaling, gunnery, mascots, divers, drydock, sports, religious services, games, drydock, torpedoes. Other ships seen include USS South Carolina (BB-26), USS Oklahoma (BB-37), USS Huntington (ACR-5), USS Michigan (BB-27), USS Amphitrite (BM-2), USS Wyoming, (BB-32), USS Kearsarge (BB-5), USS Indiana (BB-1), USS Illinois (BB-7), USS Arizona (BB-39), USS Fairfax (DD-93), USS Mayflower (PY-1), USS Maine (BB-10), USS Columbia (C-12), USS O-11 (SS-72), USS O-12 (SS-73), USS O-15 (SS-76), USS SC-27, USS SC-23, USS SC-33, USS SC-197, USS SC-233, USS SC-120,  USS Mercy, USCGS Bache, USS Agamemnon (ID# 3004). Locations shown include: Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Navy Yard, St. Thomas Virgin Islands, Norfolk Navy Yard, Fort Monroe, Philadelphia Navy Yard, Boston, Baltimore, Panama Canal. USS Iowa Thanksgiving Day program 1918 transferred to Navy Department Library.


S-081-D: Large scrapbook with nearly 700 photos, disassembled due to preservation issues, focused on Lippincott’s time as chaplain for USS Texas (BB-35), Naval Training Station Hampton Roads, and USS Pennsylvania (BB-38), 1919-1926. Scenes shown include mascots, games, inspections, hoystoning, funeral, sports, coaling, oiling, Crossing the Line, religious services, band, and groups of visitors touring the ship. Notable personnel include Woodrow Wilson and General  John Pershing. Other ships seen include: USS Mississippi (BB-42), USS Vestal (), USS Mercy (), USS Dorsey (DD-117), and several foreign vessels. Photos taken ashore in Montana (national parks), Washington (Spokane, Seattle, Puget Sound, Bremerton, Port Townsend), California (San Pedro, Los Angeles, Catalina, Pasadena), and the Panama Canal/Darien Radio Station.
