S-509 LTJG Friend W. Jenkins Collection

19 photographs from the collection of LTJG Friend W. Jenkins, USN, who was killed in the explosion of the USS Maine in February 1898. The subject matter includes: the Coast Survey Steamer Gedney (Ens. Friend W. Jenkins served aboard from 1889-1890); 5 images of coastal mountains, glaciers, and a town in Alaska (probably taken during the late 1880s and early 1890s, when Jenkins was serving on the Coast Survey steamers on the West Coast); 1 image of the US Naval Academy during the 1880s (Jenkins graduated in 1886); 1 photograph of three men sitting in front of a camp tent, circa 1880s or 1890s (all are in civilian dress and the individual on the right may be Jenkins); 1 photograph of LTJG Jenkins and CAPT Charles D. Sigsbee with several civilians onboard a ship, circa 1897 or 1898 (Sigsbee was then commanding USS Maine and Jenkins was one of her officers. One of the individuals in the image may be Fitzhugh Lee, Counsul General at Havana during Maine’s visit in January –February 1898); 10 photographs of the funeral of LTJG Friend W. Jenkins soon after Maine’s loss. Location is probably Pittsburgh, as some photos are taken by A.K. Stevenson, Jr. of that city. Views include the funeral procession (including sailors and Civil War veterans), the grave site, ceremonies, and floral memorials (including a floral model of USS Maine).
