S-502 Brian Jeffcott Collection

Collection of 26 photographs of China in the mid-1930s while aboard USS Luzon (PG-47/PR-47). From commissioning until December 1938, USS Luzon served as the flagship of the Yangtze River Patrol, operating out of Hankow, between such ports as Nanking, Chungking, and Shanghai. The subject matter of the images includes views of street scenes in Shanghai, The Bund, post office, Whangpoo River waterfront; scenes at Ichang consist of the enlisted men’s club, the naval club, rice junks, and views of a pagoda; images taken at Hankow include USS Tutuila (PR-4) and seamstresses in a boat. Few of the images have any US Navy specific connections other than they were taken or were purchased by Seaman 1/c Brian J. Jeffcott.
