2016.47 Elizabeth Gottshall collection

Collection of 16 photographs related to the naval service (convoy duty & mine sweeper duty) of Adolph J. Weinsteiger aboard USS Des Moines (C-15), 1917-1919. Images include the officers and crew of USS Des Moines (C-15); mine sweeping off the coast of Barnegat, New Jersey (one photo notes that the ship was hit by a mine on October 12th at 12:00pm) and Maryland (including an image of a mine hoisted onboard ship); and images of sailors playing football in Alexandria, Egypt, 1916 (between 26 May 1915 and 25 April 1917, USS Des Moines protected American citizens and interests threatened in the Middle Eastern theater of war), and several portraits of Weinsteiger taken in various countries (Egypt, Italy, and USA).
