Description: WWI Naval Air Station Montauk from the collection of carpenter Palmer Cunning. Twelve photographs of the station’s buildings (headquarters, mess, brig, etc.) and personnel during WWI, as well as the 1917 US Naval Reserve football team. Each image contains a caption with names of individuals identified in the photo as well as the name of the building. During World War I, the Navy established Naval Air Station Montauk in August, 1917, commanded by LT Marc Mitscher. Reconnaissance dirigibles, an airplane, troops and Coast Guard personnel were stationed at Montauk.
