Title: Josephine Beatrice Bowman Collection
Description: Photo album kept by Chief Nurse (later Lieutenant Commander) J. Beatrice Bowman. It depicts her service as one of the first members of the Navy Nurse Corps from 1908 to about 1915, at Naval hospitals at Washington, DC (1908, 1910, and 1915); Brooklyn, NY (1909-1910); Philadelphia, PA (1911-1913, also including views of the Naval Home there); and Portsmouth, VA (1913-1914). Also included are views of Miss Bowmans’ family and family home, with some of the images dating from the late 1800s. Josephine Beatrice Bowman would go on to become the Superintendent of the Navy Nurse Corps, December 1, 1922. Specific subject matter consists of a group photo of the first twenty members of the Navy Nurse Corps; the “nurses’ home” at the US Naval Hospital, Brooklyn; various buildings associated with the hospital; friends and family; officers and staff of the US Naval Hospital in Philadelphia; the US Naval Hospital, Philadelphia; various members of the nursing staff (group and individual photos); nurses quarters; many photos of Bowman with pet dogs; the US Naval hospital at Portsmouth, VA; as well as many personal photos.
