S-558 Dewitt Buffkin Collection

Copies of images from photo album related to the naval service of Dewitt Buffkin aboard USS Utah (BB-31), 1924-1925. 17 photographs were copied from original prints (not in collection) and all relate to USS Utah and her activities. Subjects include: rescue of crew of schooner Margaret M. Wymans, November 23, 1924; coaling from a shore facility; Captain W.R. Sexton welcoming a Vice Admiral onboard; Utah’s racing cutter and motor launch during a rowing race in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; members of Utah’s football team; sailors ashore on liberty at Cuelebra, Puerto Rico (activities include boxing and swimming); Crossing the Line Ceremonies aboard Utah, circa December 1924. Several images that were copied we placed into the NH series at the item level: NH 102636-NH102644.

Also included in the collection is a copy of a document called “Special Guide to Lima” by on the occasion of the visit there by crewmen of USS Utah during the Ayacucho Centenary Celebration of Peru’s independence, December 9-16, 1924. Also in the collection is a copy of USS Utah’s ship newspaper – “The Big U”, dated November 24, 1925. The donation was made by Buffkin’s daughter, Bonnie Rae.
