S-549 George R. Arnkle, Jr. Collection

Collection of 9 photographs related to USS Fanning (DD-37) during WWI. Specific subject matter includes: USS Fanning in port (in camouflage);  two images of German submarine U-58 at the time of her sinking, 17 November, 1917, including her coming alongside Fanning to have her crew removed; three photos of officers and crew of Fanning; and one photo shows the survivors of U-58 onboard Fanning posing with a dog; there are also two images of survivors in lifeboats coming alongside Fanning. One group of survivors is identified as being from SS Madura, which was destroyed by U-62.
