Originally commissioned as Submarine Tender 87 in 1919, R-10 served as a training ship between the world wars and was one of the oldest submarines in the fleet in World War II.  Between 1941 and 1945 her home port was Key West, Florida, from which she patrolled the Yucatan Channel and the Florida Straits, and ran training missions for the Fleet Sonar School at Key West
