What the Navy is Doing: Convalescent Patients at a Naval Hospital

In World War I women were accepted into the Navy to serve in limited roles, such as the nurses depicted on this poster engaged in the rehabilitation of returnees. After World War I, growing awareness of the needs of people returning from combat led Congress to create the Veterans Bureau by combining several programs designed to treat and assist veterans. Within the Bureau, women were able to continue their careers as part of the Veterans Bureau Nursing Service.
