Submitting a FOIA Request

Before submitting a request, please take a moment to review the following locations which include prereleased and publically available material:

You may submit your request by using one of the following:

SecureRelease

  1. Go to www.SecureRelease.us
  2. Click "Create Request"
  3. For new users, click "Create Account"
  4. For return users, enter your email address and password to log in
  5. Follow the instructions to submit your request

FOIA.gov

  1. Go to FOIA.GOV
  2. Click "Create a request"
  3. Type "Navy" in the search box.
  4. Click "Department of the Navy"
  5. Follow the instructions to submit your request

Postal Service
Mail your request to:
        Chief of Naval Operations, DNS-36
        2000 Navy Pentagon
        Washington DC 20350-2000

Please include the following in your request:

  • Contact information. This includes your name, physical address, and email and/or telephone number. 
  • Willingness to pay fees. The FOIA statute entitiles "all other requestors" upto 100 duplicated pages and two hours of search time free of charge. 
  • Detailed description of the records you are seeking. Please include a date range that is as narrow as possible as this will assist us in providing a faster response and decreases the possibliy of occuring fees. If you are unsatisfied with the response of your request, you may contact Mr. Christopher Julka, the Department of the Navy FOIA Public Liaison, at DONFOIAPublicLiaison@navy.mil.

Additionally, you may contact the Office of Government Information Services (OGIS) at the National Archives and Records Administration to inquire about the FOIA mediation services they offer.  The contact information for OGIS is as follows:
