A ceramic demitasse style coffee cup with gold decoration from the WWI-era armored cruiser USS San Diego (Armored Cruiser No. 6).
This demitasse style coffee cup was recovered from USS San Diego (Armored Cruiser No. 6). The decoration on it indicates that it would have been used in the wardroom mess. On the bottom, there is a maker’s mark in red that reads “VITRIFIED SHENANGO POTTERY CO NEW CASTLE, PA MADE FOR L. BARTH & SON NEW YORK”. The Shenango Pottery Company of New Castle, Pennsylvania, produced pottery under a variety of names beginning in 1902 and continuing at least into the 1960s. L. Barth & Son was a New York-based wholesaler of restaurant supplies, including china, founded in 1868.
