Description: A milk glass container with the text “MENTHOLATUM REG TRADE MARK” stamped on the bottom, recovered from USS San Diego (Armored Cruiser No. 6). The Mentholatum Company was a Kansas-based manufacturer of non-prescription topical health products founded in 1889 as The Yucca Company. It was acquired in 1988 by Rohto Pharmaceutical, which still uses its name today. At the time San Diego was sunk, the menthol-based ointment Mentholatum was advertised for such ailments as cuts, bruises, sunburns, insect bites, congestion, and headaches.
