Mid Section, Howell Torpedo No. 24, #2013-001-002

Conservators removes the seal on the mid-section of the Howell Torpedo.
Title: 140131-N-CS953-002
Description: WASHINGTON (Jan. 31, 2014) Paul Mardikian, a conservator hired by NHHC's Underwater Archeology Branch, shows the plate that they removed from the mid-section of the Howell Torpedo. Underwater Archeology along with contractors from Terra Mare Conservation, opened the midsection of the torpedo to find more than 140 pounds of sediment inside. The sediment will help NHHC tell the story of the torpedo, that was lost from the Iowa (BB 4) during a training mission and found by a dolphin in the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program off the coast of San Diego last year.
