Brazilian Coin from CSS Alabama

A round bronze Brazilian 40-Reis coin recovered from the CSS Alabama. On the reverse side is a faded crown on top of a faded shield that is surrounded by garland.  This coin was produced during the reign of King Pedro I of Brazil.

Description: A collection of Brazilian 40-Reis coins, with most of the detail lost was recovered from CSS Alabama. On the observe side of the coin above, the letters “RUS.I.D.C CON” are legible. “RUS” are the last letters in the word Petrus meaning this coin was produced during the reign of King Pedro 1 of Brazil. Officers and crew collected objects like these coins from the ports Alabama visited for supplies and repairs.
