USS Zirkel

Photogrpah of USS Zirkel
Title: USS Zirkel
Caption: Zirkel in "dazzle" camouflage
Description: Dazzle was a form of camouflage intended to make it difficult for U-boats to aim their torpedoes. By using different colors and designs, the Allied navies hoped to make it impossible for a German captain to tell a ship's size or what direction she was traveling. Although widely used by the end of the war, it is doubtful whether dazzle camouflage actually saved any ships from being torpedoed.
