Margo (S. P. 870)

1917-1918

The Navy retained the name carried by this vessel at the time of her acquisition.

(S. P. 870: tonnage 34; 1ength 65'; beam 14'; draft 4'; speed 8.6 knots; complement 11; armament 1 1‑pounder, 1 machine guns)

Margo -- a wooden‑hulled motorboat built in 1913 at Camden, N.J., by the Mathis Yacht Building Co. -- was acquired by the Navy on a free‑lease basis from G. H. McNelly, Philadelphia, Pa., on 14 June 1917; and, designated as a section patrol vessel (S. P. 870) was placed in service the same day, Ens. Rick F. Nowell, USNRF, in command.

Margo served in the waters of the Fourth Naval District, based at Philadelphia, during her brief naval career. Following the Armistice (11 November 1918) she was returned to her owner on 4 December 1918.
