Fordham, a ferryboat built in 1922 by Kyle & Purdy, City Island, N.Y., and owned by the Department of Docks, New York City, was taken over by the War Shipping Administration under a bareboat charter on 11 December 1944.

Acquired by the Navy on 6 January 1945, Fordham was assigned to the Third Naval District and was placed in service as YFB-58 at 10:00 a.m. that day. Named Lacosta on 13 March, the ferry operated in New York Harbor until 11 April 1946. Placed out of service on 3 June, the vessel was returned to her former owner on 19 June.
