Description: Poses in the cockpit of his F6F Hellcat on board USS Essex (CV-9), circa early October 1944. Note 21 kills marked on the plane, the number credited to Cdr. McCampbell as of this time. In a letter written in 1982, McCampbell said that the photographer was Joe Rosenthal. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.color
