Caption: The Naval Aircraft Factory PN-9 number A6878 which took off 1 September 1935 flown by Commander John Rogers, attempting to fly from San Francisco, California, to Hawaii. After engine failure forced the plane down 559 miles from Hawaii, the crew made sails out of lower wing fabric and sailed the aircraft to the Island. Seen after its arrival in Hawaii.
