Title: John J. Hyland, Vice Admiral, USN
Caption: Portrait photo. Vice Admiral Hyland entered the Naval Academy in 1930 and was commissioned an ensign on 31 May 1934. He advanced in rank attaining that of Vice Admiral upon being named as Commander Seventh Fleet on 1 October 1965. He served aboard USS LEXINGTON (CV-16) in 1934 and USS ELLIOT (DD-146) in 1936. On 12 May 1937, he was designated a naval aviator. He served with various squadrons until 1944 when he was assigned to the Naval Station, Anacostia, D.C. There he served for 16 months as private pilot for Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King. From June 1949 to January 1950 he was Operations Officer aboard USS KEARSARGE (CV-33). He attended the National War College in 1954. In September 1958, he assumed command of USS SARATOGA (CVA-60) - He had commanded USS ONSLOW (AVP-48) from August 1956 to July 1957. Since then he assumed command of various divisions, offices and departments.
