Caption: Portrait photo. Captain Shepard was a 1942 graduate of the Naval Academy. During World War II, he saw action in the Pacific aboard USS SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38). He became a naval aviator in 1947 and served with various squadrons through the years. From 1961 to 1964 he served as Naval Aide to President John F. Kennedy. In 1964 he assumed command of the fleet oiler USS AUCILLA (AO-56). From 1965 until 1966 he served in the Office of the Secretary of the Navy. On 16 June 1966 he assumed command of USS PRINCETON (LPH-5).
