S-48 (SS-159)
Title: S-48 (SS-159)
Caption: Something went wrong in the middle of Long Island Sound near Bridgeport, Connecticut. Water seeped in, formed chlorine gas when it struck the batteries, and the boat refused to come to the surface. The bow compartment was lightened until it projected above the water. Forty members of the civilian crew (the ship had not yet been turned over to the Navy) climbed up a torpedo tube and perched on the hull. For eight hours they sat there until they set fire to a mattress and attracted Standard Oil Company Tug no. 28 which rescued them, 9 December 1921.
