Title: Plan of the attack on the French fleet in Basque (Aix) Roads, France, on 11-12 April 1809.
Caption: From the Naval Chronicle, vol. 22, London, 1809. A British fireship attack, commanded by Captain Lord Cochrane, on 11 April, drove the French from their anchorage and forced many of them aground. The following day, elements of the English fleet attacked the grounded ships, destroying four of them. None of the attackers were lost, but a sharp controversy resulted from Cochrane's charges that his superior, Lord Gambier, failed to bring his main fleet into action, thus permitting many French ships to escape.
