Caption: U.S. Mine Laying Fleet in planting formation. Eight ships in line abreast, two in advance, awaiting their turn. The British Mine-laying Squadron is shown in the left distance. Six destroyers visible near the horizon line. The Squadron would steam in this formation, planting five or six lines of mines at one time, for a distance of 46 to 55 miles, at 12 knots or 14 land miles an hour. The ships are 500 yards apart. North Sea.
