Title: Attack on U-66 (Type IXC) and U-117 (Type XB)
Caption: German submarines being bombed by TBFs and F4Fs of VC-1 aboard USS CARD (CVE-11) in the central Atlantic. U-117 was sunk in these attacks. Attack on two German submarines in position 39° 32' N/ 38° 21' W, by planes from the USS CARD (CVE-11). Pilots: TBF's Lieutenant junior grade A. H. Sallenger, Lieutenant C. R. Stapler, Lieutenant junior grade Fonley, F4F's: Lieutenant N. D. Hodson, Lieutenant E. D. Jackson. They were first sighted and attacked by Lieutenant Sallenger, flying alone. Due to the combined efforts of the above five pilots, one of the U/BS-A large 1600 ton supply boat was sunk.
