Description: Action between U.S. Frigate President and H.M. Sloop Little Belt, 16 May 1811 Oil on canvas, 14 x 21, by J. Cartwright (circa 1789-1829). It depicts President (left), commanded by Captain John Rodgers, confronting the British sloop of war Little Belt. This action, which resulted is significant casualties on board the British ship, was widely regarded in the United States as avenging the June 1807 incident in which the British 50-Gun Ship Leopard fired on U.S. Frigate Chesapeake and seized several of her crew members. The original painting is in the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, Annapolis, Maryland. It was donated by the U.S. Naval Institute in 1949.
