80-G-387175 USS Sable

Photo #: 80-G-387175 USS Sable
Title: USS Sable
Description: (IX-81) Launching a TDN-1 drone while steaming off Traverse City, Michigan, during flight tests on 10 August 1943. This plane has assumed an excessive nose-up attitude and is probably about to stall. The terrain in the distance appears to be Sutton's Bay, indicating that the ship was heading westwards in Grand Traverse Bay, off the northern end of the Old Mission Peninsula. Note the J2F amphibian flying off the ship's port bow, possibly acting as a drone control aircraft. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
