Collection photo # S-593.01 - looking up the river at St. Nazaire, France, showing shipping alongside the wharves, 1918, taken from USS Pensacola
Collection of 55 photographs taken by Stanton's grandfather during his 1918-1919 naval service as a crew member aboard USS Pensacola (ID #2078). Most of the imagery relate to USS Pensacola’s WWI voyages to and from France during the middle and later months of 1918, her early 1919 trip to the eastern Mediterranean, and mid-1919 visit through the Panama Canal. A few others may have been taken somewhat earlier to later. Specific imagery include USS Pensacola while she was at sea, in the locks at St. Nazaire, France; the transport ship USS Agamemnon in French waters, various views of foreign ships and locations such as Sicily, Turkey, Syria, and other Eastern Mediterranean locations. There is also a “kite” observation balloon over several patrol vessels off New York Harbor, 1918. The ships present in this image include at least three converted yachts, a submarine chaser and a destroyer.
