Collection Guide:
Images include views of USS Thorn in Ulithi Harbor (image was dated May 1945, but is more likely 1944). The ship is in floating dry dock as well as alongside Japanese BB Nagato at Yokosuka. Also included are images of the USS Thorn crew, including commanding officer CDR F.H. Schneider; executive officers; Schneider receiving the Silver Star; groups of various divisions (communications, deck, and engineering); ship’s mascot “sticker”; Crossing the Line ceremonies in the Indian Ocean, November 8, 1945, while homeward bound; underway replenishment via Breeches Buoy Bag (as seen from USS Thorn); and ships coming alongside mooring buoy. Photos were taken 1944-1945, one off Iwo Jima (February 19, 1945) and one on V-J Day (15 August, 1945). Several of the images donated have been removed and placed into the NH image series at the item level (NH 92884-NH 92902). See below for these photographs.
