2018.11 Steve Shultz Collection

Photo album and associated documents related to the naval career of Carroll Jay Shultz beginning with training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, during his time aboard USS Lexington (CV-2) during the mid to late 1930s, and his time stationed at Fleet Wing Seven (FAW-7) and Patrol Aircraft Service Unit Seven-C at the Dunkeswell Joint Air Base, Devonshire, England during 1944-1945. Specific imagery consists of friends and activities (chow line, inspections, etc.) during basic training at NTS Great Lakes, as well as general views of the buildings and structures on the base; sailing to Honolulu, HI; various views of the city and base; views of Saratoga and Lexington at Honolulu; aircraft landing aboard Lexington; shore leave in Honolulu; Crossing the Line Ceremony/Neptune Party activities (excellent shots); and visiting Panama. The Dunkeswell Joint Air Base images include group photos of Shultz and his friends in front of aircraft and base buildings. Collection also includes documentation regarding Shultz’s service, newspaper articles regarding the loss of USS Lexington, and a hand-drawn illustration of the staff at Dunkeswell.

Shultz served aboard USS Lexington for three years and 8 months and was classified as a Seaman 1st Class at the time of his February 1940 discharge. He re-enlisted in March of 1941 and served during much of WWII, achieving the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate First Class (AAM1C).
