S-510 Carter Rila Collection

Carter Rila Collection. Collection of two photo albums containing 215 photographs related to the Cuban Coastal Survey by USS Nokomis (PY-6) from 1925-1926, plus some personal views of the unidentified sailor who made the albums. Below is a description of the images found in each album. Album labeled as S-510 includes the following topics: general view of USS Nokomis; crewmembers onboard ship; members of the choir; playing dominos; a liberty party; and mascot dogs. Also included are images related to building survey towers and associated work (including a Loening OL-2 amphibian plane, which was used for survey work). Various locations in Cuba are identified.  The second album, labeled as S-510-A, includes the following topics: various views of USS Nokomis; crewmembers performing various tasks (cleaning, scrubbing clothing, coaling ship, barber shaving heads, a jazz band, preparation of Christmas turkey; groups of crew, including officers; Philadelphia Navy Yard (with USS Arkansas (BB-33) in drydock); PN-10 patrol planes (probably NAF Philadelphia) the US sesquicentennial exposition in Philadelphia; University of Pennsylvania football games; Naval Station Key West (various views of the city involving sailors); multiple locations in Cuba; Loening OL-2 planes used by the Cuban Survey; sailors playing baseball in Cuba and Key West; sailors from USS Nokomis performing survey tasks such as erecting a tower and placing survey markers; and miscellaneous unknown people (likely to be family and friends of the unidentified sailor to made the album).
