NHF-003 Redfield-Harris Collection

Redfield-Harris Collection Donated by Mrs. J.B. REDFIELD, Presented 27 March, 1961. Approximately 120 images of miscellaneous battleships, submarines, aircraft carriers, and other ships in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Prints were originally in the possession of Miss Harriet A. HARRIS, Naval Nursing Corps, USN (Retired). File contains a note from Rear Admiral Eller to Mrs. Redfield-Harris thanking her for her donation and some handwritten notes on the collection’s contents. Some photos have been removed and moved to the NH series or assigned NH numbers.

Submarines include: USS V-1 [2 prints], USS V-2 [1 print], AND USS V-3 [1 print]
Ship prints include: 3 of USS LANGLEY (CV-1); 2 of USS LEXINGTON (CV-2); 1 of USS LITCHFIELD (DD-336); 1 of USS OMAHA (CL-4); 1 of USS PREBLE (DD-345); 1 of USS PRUITT (DD-34); 2 of USS SARATOGA (CV-3); 1 of USS SICARD (DD-346).

9 images either of USS RELIEF (AH-1) or taken from the ship in Panamanian waters, c. 1920’s.

 

NHF-003-D

28 images of Panama/the Panama Canal. Image subjects include: 3 of native San Blas Indians; 1 of the statue of Balboa at Balboa, C.Z.; 2 of the Fleet Liberty landing; 1 of sailors beginning liberty at the landing; 1 of the Canal Zone Penitentiary; 1 of the Administration building; 1 of the Captain of the Port office; 1 of a statue of Simon Bolivar in Panama City; 2 of the electric mules alongside the Canal; 15 of the Canal itself.
NHF-003-E: 1  small image of USS SHENANDOAH (ZR-1), two images, of the USS SHENANDOAH (ZR-1) moored to the USS PATOKA (AO-9) have been removed and replaced by the printouts of their NHC online library pages.

Subjects vary widely and include: Anyox, British Columbia; Totem poles at Alert Bay, British Columbia; Hospital and Marine barracks at Puget Sound Navy Yard; Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, New York; San Pedro-Los Angeles Harbor Light House; Breakwater at San Pedro; 2 small images of downtown San Diego; US Naval Hospital, San Diego; Byrd’s Antarctic ships ELEANOR BOLLING and CITY OF NEW YORK at Colon, Canal Zone; sailing ship on the “Spanish Main”; Fleet landing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; 6 postcard images of Cuban historic and urban settings.

2 images of President Calvin Coolidge’s review of the US Pacific Fleet from afar, c. mid-1920’s.

 

NHF-003-H

9 small, generally low-quality images of US cruisers, mostly taken at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, c. 1929-1932. Ship types are mainly OMAHA-class (CL-4/12). One image is of a PENSACOLA-class carrier (CA-24/25).

 

NHF-003-I

12 generally low-quality prints of USN aircraft carriers and battleships. Most are unidentified. Identifiable ships include: USS LANGLEY (CV-1); USS LEXINGTON (CV-2); USS NEW MEXICO (BB-40); USS SARATOGA (CV-3); USS TENNESSEE (BB-43). There is also an image of San Diego included.

22 images of the following places, c. 1930: Panama Canal Zone; Naval Hospital, Mare Island, California; Newport, Rhode Island (Naval War College & Naval Hospital); Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington [panoramas].

 

NHF-003-K

12 images of miscellaneous auxiliaries, c. 1920’s. Mostly unidentified as to ship, etc. One interesting image from this group shows a navy seaplane on fire and many small boats trying to put out the blaze. Identified ship is: USS WRIGHT (AV-1).
