Approximately 175 photographs from the naval service of John L. McCarthy, D.D.S. at U.S. Naval Station, Tutuila, Samoa between 1921 and 1923. The vast majority of the photographs have handwritten descriptions on the back. The collection primarily focuses on native life and the lives of Americans on the island. Photographs also show the vessels USS Fortune (), USS Richmond (), USS Ontario (), HMS Chatham, and SS Ventura. Additional photos show Governor Edwin Taylor Pollock, a gathering of Chiefs, scenic view of Pago Pago and its harbor, naval station personnel with their families, and a baseball team.
