NHF-055 Mahakian-Gaddis Collection

96 page photo album and 49 loose photographs and postcards. Originally donated by Colonel C.K. Mahakian to the Naval Historical Foundation, and subsequently donated to the Naval History and Heritage Command. The photo album was compiled by MoMM2c James W. Gaddis, depicting his time on board a YMS (YMS-86 and/or YMS-315) in the Pacific theater during World War II. There are typical scenes on board the ship and ashore on liberty, with a focus on his friends and their activities, including what appears to be a beard contest. Locations shown include Fiji, Espiritu Santu, Tonga, New Zealand, Tulagi, Okinawa, Saipan, Majuro, Pearl Harbor, Oregon. Other ships seen include USS Franklin (CV-13) and USS Morris (DD-417). Small membership cards including American Legion and liberty cards. Loose photos and postcards show a variety of ships circa World War II including: USS Duluth (CL-87), USS Hocking (APA-121), SS United States, USS Nautilus (SS-168), USS West Virginia (BB-48), USS Ranger (CV-4), battleships at Long Beach, USS LST-570, USS Oahu (ARG-5), USS Hyde (APA-173), USS Queens (APA-103), USS Pittsburgh (CA-4) in Venice, USS Gwin (DM-33), USS LST-592, USS Talladega (APA-208), USS Constitution, USS LST-463, USS Edgecombe (APA-164), USS Massachusetts (BB-2)  turret stereoscopic card, USS Lake St. Clair (SP-2904), SS J.M. McAndrew, unidentified Submarine, unidentified Light Cruiser. Locations shown include: Mothball Fleet San Diego 1950’s, US Naval Hospital San Diego Balboa Park, Naval Training Station San Diego and Point Loma.
