Collection Guide:
The photographs are a combination of official US Navy images taken of the expedition (Operation Deep Freeze I, II and III, and several from High Jump) as well as many color slides which may have been taken in part by Dr. Paul Siple (his name is handwritten or typed on some of the slides) and Mandarich. The slides are more scenic and personal in nature; showing views of glaciers (from land and from their ship), penguins, land-based equipment and activities, and ship’s crew members in cold weather gear. Though there are very few captions associated with the slides and negatives, the photographs are excellent and likely represent imagery previously unseen.
