106 black and white images and negatives (with several duplicated images) related to Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox during World War II. Commissioning ceremony for USS Iowa (BB-61), 22 February 1943, at Brooklyn Navy Yard. Commencement exercises at Northwestern University, 16 June 1943, with Knox receiving a Doctor of Law degree, and congratulating graduating members of the NROTC class. Many views of Knox conferring medals, possibly at the Navy Department in 1943. Mediterranean inspection tour by Knox to Italy and North Africa. Inspection tour by Knox to Britain in fall 1943. Personnel seen include Governor Bourke Hickenlooper of Iowa; Admiral Ernest J. King; General George Patton;  Rear Admiral John Downes; Brigadier General Thomas Holcomb; Vice Admiral Henry K. Hewitt; Rear Admiral William Glassford; Admiral Harold Stark; many others, some named and others unidentified. Ships seen include USS Iowa (BB-61), USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Augusta (CA-31), USS Tuscaloosa (CA-37), HMS Victory, HMS Duke of York. Some images are marked Life Magazine, copyright status of those images is uncertain.
