Caption: Collection photo # UA 54.03.01 - LT (jg.) Lloyd O. Johnson, circa 1943
Description: Collection donated by LCDR Lloyd O. Johnson related to his naval service during the 1930s-1940s. The collection is made up of miscellaneous subject groupings with no known relationship to one another. Included is a set of images stamped by the US Navy Recruiting Station at Denver, CO in 1934-1935 and mostly pertaining to USS California (general onboard activities, crew, firing guns, the ship at sea, etc.) as well as USS Colorado, rifle practice in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Naval Training Station at San Diego. These photos appear to be US Navy stock images and have no relationship to the donor. The second set of photos include flight operations of the USS Lexington (or possibly Saratoga) with both torpedo and scouting planes engaging the arresting cables with its hook (circa 1930-1931). Additional imagery consists of the following topics: 1933 funeral of Rear Admiral Ridley McLean (Commander Battleship Division three); 1936 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visit to Denver for the US Navy Day; 1933-1934 view of USS Idaho during modernization; Commanders of Battleship Division three (1932 & 1935) – again, no known connection with the donor is known. The final sets of photos include LT Johnson (donor) and the ship he served on as well as other off shore activities, including: onboard USS Henderson (circa 1929-1930), portraits of Johnson, at Pearl Harbor (1942-1944), and at Balboa in the Panama Canal Zone (circa 1936). Many documentary items were included, but transferred to the US Navy library (inventory available upon request).
