2017.13 Rear Admiral Stephen S. Israel Collection

Approximately 350 color slides from the service of Rear Admiral Stephen S. Israel, USN. Slides depict the 1968 Vietnam deployment of USS Borie (DD-704), taken by then-Ensign Israel. The slides are presented chronologically, following the ship from the Panama Canal, San Diego, Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, Midway, to Hong Kong. Shipboard activities include: Mark 32 torpedo launching; underway replenishment, including high line and helicopter operations; firing salvos on the gun line off Vietnam; Tropical Storm Rose; plane guard on Yankee Station operating with aircraft carriers; many images with the ship’s QH-50 DASH drone helicopters. Series of images of Israel ashore at Pan Theit, US Army II Corps, including in flight on board an Army Cessna L19 spotter plane calling in gunfire. Other ships seen include USS California (DLGN-22), USS Pictor (AF-54), USS Claud Jones (DE-1033), USS Long Beach (CGN-9), USS Steinaker (DD-863), USS Blandy (DD-943), USS New Jersey (BB-62) and tug Weehawken (YTB-776). Many crew members are listed by name. Includes a 271 page Powerpoint presentation of the cruise on CD, and an interview on CD with Rear Admiral Israel. Powerpoint pages with captions have been printed out and included in the collection folders.
